Friday, October 10: From Wilmington I drove to Myrtle Beach, SC. I booked a room at the Diplomat motel on Ocean Drive between 6th and 7th Avenue. Besides the beach, Myrtle Beach is known for its golf courses and its strip clubs. Not much going on here this time of year, so I moved on.
Saturday, October 11: I drove from Myrtle Beach to Charleston, SC. I stopped into the Visitor Center and booked a room at the Charleston Riverview Hotel. After the Visitor Center and while still sitting in my car, I spoke to a friend from business school, Tom Finnegan, who grew up in Charleston. He gave me many suggestions of what to do and see while in Charleston. From there I drove to the City Market and to The Battery. The City Market is where the black community used to do its trading and shopping and is now a major commercial area with street vendors, restaurants, bars and shops. The Battery is now a city park, but during the Civil War it was a Fortress area. Today, the cannons still remain. Checked in to the Charleston Riverview Hotel. Sunday, October 12: Awoke at the Charleston Riverview Hotel. At sunset I went to the roof of a new downtown hotel at the corner of East Bay and Market Street for a drink as Tom had suggested. Tom also suggested a restaurant called Hanks, but I went by and it was a little too fancy for me at that time, so I went to a more casual restaurant/bar on Market Street. Monday, October 13: Awoke at the Charleston Riverview Hotel. Today I took a carriage tour with Palmetto Carriage Tours through historic Charleston. The tour started and ended at the big “Red Barn” in the heart of the historic district. It is not every day that you find a number of barns with horses, mules and carriages in the downtown of a city. I found the College of Charleston to be especially beautiful. It looks like it would have looked a hundred years ago. Part of Mel Gibson’s movie, The Patriot, was filmed here. The seen where his son is signing up to enlist in the Confederate Army was filmed on the main quad of the campus. We also saw many historic antebellum mansions, including the Aiken-Rhett House and the Old Exchange & Provost Dungeon (a have photo). Tuesday, October 14: Checked out of the Charleston Riverview Hotel. Lunch at the St. George Restaurant. I drove by the oldest Reform Synagogue on my way out of town. From Charleston I drove to Atlanta to spend some time with my old business school friends via Athens.
